San Francisco Wave Organ Recordings

This past weekend I was able to visit the mysterious wave organ located in San Francisco’s Marina district next to the Golden Gate Yacht Club. When I was first told about the wave organ before I moved to the Bay Area, it was described to me as some kind of weird sound sculpture made up of exposed pipes that reach into the water, with the sounds being governed by the level of the tide. While this description is more or less accurate, one should not visit the wave organ expecting to hear a symphony of harmonic tones. The sounds produced by the submerged tubes are often reminiscent of noises one might hear in a restroom. While some might think this sounds like crap, I was particularly entertained by the unique acoustics of the sound of the Bay traveling up these concrete tubes. My visit was planned around both the high tide and the full moon which is when the wave organ is supposed to be the most active. I intend to return in a week or two and make some follow up field recordings to see how much the tide influences the sounds emitted by the Wave Organ.

More information about the Wave Organ can be found here.

Spinning on Air interview with R. Murray Schafer

Spinning on Air interview with R. Murray Schafer

Here is a link to a great audio interview with famed Canadian composer and founder of the World Soundscape Project, R. Murray Shafer. Shafer coined the terms “soundscape” and “acoustic ecology” in his pioneering book, “The Tuning of the World”, published in 1977, in which he discusses how “noise pollution” caused by our industrialized society has overtaken the sound of our natural environment.                               Check out this short film about Schafer which                                                                              gives you a quick sense of his worldview.
