Looping is basically repeating segment of sound over and over. Loopstations allow people to create music with this very basic mathematical principle. These are very popular in the world of bedroom musicians.

A loopstation works like this. 

-you find/play/sing a peice of music that you would like to build off of

-you start the loop and play the peice of music

-you end the loop when you want to start the the loop from the beginning

-you can then add more sounds in to the loop to make it more intricate an/or play with the loop

That's the best I can describe a loopstation in words.

It seems to me that nowadays, Everyone is trying to be a musician. I can't really compare to previous generations but I think that the more we see people making music in their houses the more accessible it seems thus making more people want to make music. I also think that the rise of bedroom musicians has to do with how much more music we have access to compared to previous generations. 

I'm going to go a bit off topic. I believe that because we are a generation that virtually has headphones glued in to our ears, we understand music more than previous generations have.
