Proficiency Exam Policy

Students may have the opportunity to test out of some courses up to 30 days prior to the first scheduled day of the class.  Proficiency exams may only be attempted once.  Students may not attempt to test out of any course which they have previously attended. Proficiency Exams will not be allowed in a student’s last semester. Arrangements for exams are made through the Office of the Registrar.

General Education Proficiency Exams

Students may attempt a proficiency exam for Mathematical Concepts, Geometry, American Literature, and/or Analytical Writing. An exam may only be attempted once and will not be allowed if the student has begun attendance in the class for which he/she is testing.  In order to receive credit, a student must achieve a grade of 80% or higher on the proficiency exam.  Upon successful completion of a General Education proficiency exam, credit for the class will be awarded as Pass (P)/Fail (F) and will be applied to the first term of the student’s enrollment on the transcript.

Common Core Class and Professional Level Class Proficiency Exams

Students with previous experience may attempt proficiency exams for Common Core and Professional classes after receiving initial approval from their Program Director.  An exam may only be attempted once and will not be allowed if the student has begun attendance in the class for which he/she is testing.  In order to receive credit, a student must achieve a grade of 80% or higher on the proficiency exam.  Upon successful completion of the proficiency exam appropriate credit will be awarded as Pass (P)/Fail (F) and will be applied to the first term of the student’s enrollment on the transcript.

Proficiency Exam Fees

A fee of $100 will be charged for each proficiency exam and is payable prior to taking the exam. The fee is non-refundable.

Procedures:

If a student wishes to test out of a course they must complete the following:

  1. See the Office of the Registrar and obtain a Proficiency Exam Form.
  2. Obtain signatures of approval on the Proficiency Exam form from the appropriate program director for each examination to be taken.
  3. Pay the appropriate fee to the Office of the Bursar and obtain the Bursar’s signature on the Proficiency Exam Form indicating that all fees have been paid.
  4. Return the form to the Office of the Registrar and schedule a time to take the exam.
