While I was doing research, I ran into an article about 9 other big name artists that give back to their communities. I’m sure there are many more ,but like I’ve said before there aren’t many who do give back. There are still some artists and industry execs out here who do think about where they came from and know they have the power to make these changes and set the example. The industry is heavily focused on setting trends and riding them; this is definitely one I would like to see more often.

This year’s event for the Backpack Giveaway was also for a Basketball Tournament also hosted by FAB.

About 1,000 backpacks and school supplies were given away this year and thanks to the help of event coordinator Theresa Anderson, they have been about to serve about 1,500 people in the community annually through their events for the past 9 years. Learn more here.

An interesting article I came across about how hip hop artists should form coalitions to achieve social progress that are similar to those that exist in Hollywood. We need to invest in our communities!!

This year’s Backpack Giveaway in August during the “Back to School” season. The event is meant to give children essential and fundamental school supplies that their families simply cannot afford. Backpacks are given away to the kids with supplies like notebooks and pencils right before it’s time to go back to school. The children of our community are the most important in our communities and without the right guidance and tools they need, our future would be much darker without people in our communities giving them hope and help when it is much needed. This event is what specifically caught my attention when it comes to the events the Fab hosts because of it’s focus on the youth of his community and his knowledge of the importance of guiding our youth.

Some footage from last year’s 2013 Thanksgiving event. With the help of other celebrities, they were able to feed hundreds of families in the city of Oakland. This past Thanksgiving of 2014 marked the 7th straight year Mistah F.A.B. has hosted the event.

The project is about how figures in the hip hop community often talk about “giving back to their hood”, but rarely follow through. With the exception of a few artists, the majority of people in hip hop culture never truly use their influence and power to give back and strengthen their communities. These few artists that do give back serve as positive role models and leaders to their community and more importantly the youth of their communities. A great example is not far from home, here in the Bay Area. An artist named Mistah F.A.B. from North Oakland annually runs numerous events in Oakland, CA such as his Backpack Giveaway (during the time kids go back to school), Thanksgiving Turkey Drive and Christmas Toy Drive. Fab uses his connections and influences to gather other artists(one of whom is MC Hammer, who is his closest associate when it comes to running these events) and many other figures to run these events and raise the money to make them possible.
