He dropped out of high school in the late sixties to pursue a career as a rock guitarist. When his band disbanded, he felt lost, upset, and turned to alcohol. Buddhism helped him get back on track and after he became sober he returned to school, earning a BA in English from UC Berkeley and MFA in Creative Writing from UC Irvine. He began teaching meditation, and worked as a technical writer. He still plays the guitar and writes rock songs related to Buddhism.
He is a Buddhist author, teacher, and innovator in the field of addiction treatment. He is a successful leader in the mindful recovery movement.
He often teaches at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center, in Woodacre, CA and Yoga Kula, in Berkeley.
