Introduction and Conclusion


Our film is the eyes and ears of the audience, a candid view, “in the wild”, as we follow Danny and Jose into a day of taking photos of San Francisco. Introducing the main characters as they begin their day, getting onto BART, discussing their plans to get that shot…whatever that shot might be. We integrate character intro with stills of their previous work as we make our way into the city and the promise of pics to come.



We have ended our journey with a clear view of Street Photography defined by Jose and Danny, and how two men with differing perspectives and experiences have connected in the pursuit of The Shot.

The Approach

Melissa Gainer:

We will be focusing the narrative spine of our documentary, “Through the Eye”, on finding common threads, friendship, through Art, Street Photography.
The two main characters of our documentary are Daniel Atangan and Jose Ravelo. Along side interview shots, we plan on following them on one or two of their adventures to get footage of them taking pictures. We feel that this will bring to light their process, and how they developed their perspectives.
The main conflict of our film addresses how street photography perspectives differ from other genres of photography.
Change will be present in the evolution these photographers have made from people with cameras, to street photographers. How their shared art has affected their friendship too.

We really don’t think we will have a problem with making this piece visually strong. Our topic is focused around strong visuals and being able to tell a story using still frame photography. If anything, our issues are going to revolve around sound, and lights. Two things that are too abundant in the city.

Heather Freeze:

I would like to see a definition of Street Photography verses Traditional Compositional Photography. I am looking forward and onward to seeing more of these two, their Art, the risks they may take…trespass… how this hobby or pastime has changed either of their life paths. How their friendship has evolved because or in spite of this “friendly” competition.

Our Core Concept

Through the Eye is about following two friends trying to establish their own paths and perspectives in the world using street photography. We followed our photographers, Daniel Atangan and Jose Ravelo, through a day-long photoshoot in San Fransisco. We will be learning about their art, their differing styles, their process, and their friendship. And all will be seen through the lenses of their cameras, and ours.


As we look through our film and listen to Danny and Jose’s interviews the “friendship” aspect is becoming more and less clear. They have this medium in common…but, are they more acquaintances?

Group Presentation

We are PHOCUS and our film is called “Through the Eye.”

We decided to take the observational and poetic approach to this piece. Our focus will be on the process these photographers must go through for their Art. By interviews presented in voice over format we will present their differing views and perspectives.

Our film is about the journey of two photographers, Jose Ravelo and Daniel Atangan.  Their Art, their differing styles, their process, and their friendship, each telling their story through the eye of their camera.
