Graduation Reel Submission Guidelines

Please review the complete guidelines below for the proper grad reel submissions. Reels may be edited at the discretion of the Office of Student Affairs, Program Directors, and the editor.

Content & Audience

  • The Grad Reel will be played at the graduation ceremony for family and guests. We encourage you to treat your grad reel submission with professionalism and pride.
  • Please keep your content appropriate for a general audience that will include children (rated PG 13 or below).
  • Please submit class assignments and program related work only.
  • Submissions will be reviewed and must adhere to the Student Standards of Conduct – Content of Assignments (please refer to college catalog).
  • All submissions must have visuals and audio. Please do not submit a separate audio track (convert audio to *.aiff before inserting into Final Cut Pro).
  • Audio and visuals may be edited at the editor's discretion.
  • Please do not fade in and out at the beginning and end of your reel.

Length

  • Each graduate will have up to 30 seconds of their work shown.

Your options are:

  • You may submit a complete reel and our editor will edit your reel for you. *OR*
  • You may submit a 30 second cut with 1-2 seconds of handle at either end.

Text

  • Please do not include any personal messages.  No “thank you” or “shout out” messages are allowed.
  • Please check for typos, ex. “copyright” not “copywrite.”
  • Acceptable text are title cards or captions for work that is not your own.
  • Your name and program will be added by the editors if you do not have title cards.

Format, FCP/AEP Settings

  • The reel will be shown in wide screen format. Pillarboxes in your reels are acceptable.
  • QuickTime *.mov files only.  No other file formats will be accepted (ex. mp4).
  • Due the last day of portfolio.
  • The file must be named with your program, first, and last name, like this: AVE_Last_First.mov
  • Please upload your QuickTime file to the storageemy server (on-campus only):

        • Tools > Render Settings > Frame Size: HDTV 720p, Pixel Aspect: Square, Compressor: Animation (h.264 and Apple Pro Res are acceptable if the QuickTime file is over 1GB but we cannot guarantee quality will be maintained after the final render.)
        • File > Export > QuickTime > Current Settings (for the sequence you set the render settings for)

        • Composition > New Composition > Basic > Select Preset: HDV/HDTV 720 29.97
        • Composition > Add to Render Queue
        • In the Render Queue: Output Module > Custom > Format: QuickTime
        • In the Main Options tab for Output Module Settings, click on Format Options in the Video Output section and select the Video Codec: Animation (h.264 and Apple Pro Res are acceptable if the QuickTime file is over 1GB but we cannot guarantee quality will be maintained after the final render.)

PROGRAM SPECIFIC SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Folders will be checked at 9am the day after the due date.  If your file is not there, we can only assume you have chosen not to submit anything.

Animation and Visual Effects

  • Students finishing in July your grad reel is due on 7/31/16. Students finishing in September your grad reel is due on 9/10/16.  
  • It is very important to remember that you need to drop off your reel on the server indicated for your program. You can not send me a google drive to upload for you. You will need to drop it on the drive your shelf.
  • The file must be named with your program, first, and last name, like this: AVE_Last_First.mov

  • Please include visuals on your reel.
  • Proper credit must be given if you are using work that you do not own.  This is typical of Audio Post Production and Game Audio Reels.  Please give credit in the lower third of the screen, for example “Footage copyright EA Games” or “Animation by AVE student John Doe” for no more than 5 seconds. Please check for typos, ex. “copyright” not “copywrite.”
