Just what is an online generative musical sequencer you ask? Well I found myself asking the same question. In short, it’s what made this:

Find out more after the break

A little bit more in depth explanation would be that it’s an interface developed by  the Turkish computer programmer and sound artist, Batuhan Bozkurt, over on Earslap.com that uses “a cellular automaton type logic… to produce sound events.”

The interface is pretty simple. You place directional pieces in squares with your mouse, choose a tempo and a scale and hit play! Just by fussing around with different patterns you can start to get a feel for how to accomplish some neat tricks within the program.

Go a head and give it a try for yourself on the Otomata page and be sure to check out some of the other cool projects on the site. There’s even a button that’ll copy a link to share what you come up with!

And lastly; here’s another example using a different scale
