Chris Metzler

Producer/Director, Tilapia Film

September 27, 2013
2 – 4 PM
Meyer Hall at Emeryville campus

Join Producer/Director Chris Metzler as he recounts his varied film career, shares insights on the business and offers strategies on how to make a living in today’s creative arts market.

After graduating from USC with a degree in business and cinema, Metzler’s film career has taken him from the depths of agency work, to coordinating post-production for awful American movies seen late at night in Belgium. His film directing and producing work has resulted in him crisscrossing the country with the aid of caffeinated beverages. He made his way in the Nashville country and Christian music video industries, before finally forsaking his soul to commercial LA rock n’ roll. These misadventures ultimately culminated in him winning a Billboard Magazine Music Video Award.

He eventually fled to San Francisco to join the independent documentary film scene. Metzler’s directorial debut, Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea, an offbeat environmental documentary, became a cult favorite and received a theatrical release in the United States as well as a national broadcast on the Sundance Channel. He has gone on to pursue other sub-cultural documentary subjects, including: rogue economists, lucha libre wrestlers, swamp rat hunters, ganjapreneurs, and evangelical Christian surfers. Metzler recently finished traveling the theatrical circuit promoting Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, screened at SXSW, and aired nationally on PBS.
